World Grand Prix Qualification Status
Last weekend’s Derby Players Championship event was the penultimate weekend of action before the cut off for qualification for the World Grand Prix in October.
In order to qualify for the World Grand Prix players must be either ranked in the top 16 in the PDC Order of Merit, or be in the top 14 in the Players Championship Order of Merit (discounting those who have already qualified via the PDC OoM), or be in the top two ranked players from Ireland/Northern Ireland.
The Players Championship events in Nuland on September 24 & 25 will be the final chance that players have to accumulate prize money and adjust their ranking positions. There are a few players who could still sneak into contention while others are hoping to hang on to their places in the World Grand Prix.
Co Stompe currently occupies the final qualification spot from the Players Championship Order of Merit and is a mere £400 ahead of Steve Beaton and Colin Osborne. Scott Rand is a further £800 back and Magnus Caris is £2,600 behind Stompe, meaning that he would to reach the final of one of the events in Holland to stand any chance of breaking into the top 14.
William O’Connor and Brendan Dolan currently hold the two Irish qualifying positions with £4,000 and £3,600 in respective prize money. Their positions in the World Grand Prix are under threat from Michael Mansell who has £3,200 to his name and Shane O’Connor who has accumulated £2,200 of prize money.
Phil Taylor is one player who will definitely be there and he is made the 13/8 betting favourite by Sky Bet. Defending champion James Wade is a 7/1 chance as is Premier League champion Gary Anderson; they are closely followed in the betting by World Champion Adrian Lewis at 8/1.
