World Grand Prix Betting: Taylor v Burnett

Burnett has hit 10 maximums to Taylor's eight

If someone had said to me pre-tournament that two former World Champions would battle it out in the semi-final, I’d probably have guessed that Phil Taylor would be one of them. Richie Burnett, however, would have been a name that few would have thrown into the hat.

The Welshman has exceeded most people’s expectations this week. That is most people’s other than his own.

“I'm having a great time and playing good darts,” said Burnett. “This has been coming for the last year and I just had to get that one step over the line and people have a different attitude towards playing you.

“I'm quite content with the way I'm playing and I'm showing that I've still got what it takes. When I'm getting chances I'm taking them and I can relax and go for it in the semis now.”

If he is going to prolong his World Grand Prix fairy tale another day then he’ll be required to up his game yet another notch. While wins over Gary Anderson, Denis Ovens and Mark Hylton have been impressive none of those players have put Burnett’s game under the relentless and intense pressure that Taylor will.

Some bookmakers are going as short as 1/33 on a Taylor win here. That looks a little disrespectful to Burnett’s achievements, but it also reflects the magnitude of the task at hand for the Prince of Wales.

One area where he can match Taylor is in the 180 hitting. So far, in the three matches played this week, Burnett has hit 10 maximums to Taylor’s eight.

The main reason for that statistic is that The Power isn’t averse to switching to the treble 19, even if his first two darts have hit the treble 20. The way that he throws his darts sometimes means that the bed can get blocked. Burnett doesn’t have such problems or inclinations. If his first two darts are in the treble 20, he’ll be going for the maximum 99 times out of 100.

That’s why I think that the bookmakers have got this one wrong, and at odds of 2/1 on Burnett hitting the most 180s in the match there is huge value in backing him to do so.
