World Grand Prix Betting: Newton v Lloyd

both players are currently in very decent shape

Apparently Annus Mirabilis means ‘Wonderful Year’ in Latin. There can be no more apt description for Wes Newton’s 2011. His best results in the World Championship (quarter), the World Matchplay (quarter), the UK Open (final), and the European Championship (last 16) have all come this year. He also had a child. In fact the only majors that haven’t seen a personal best Wes Newton performance in 2011 are the ones that haven’t happened yet. His current World ranking of 7 is also his highest. In 2005, 2009 and 2010 Newton reached the last 16 of the World Grand Prix; suggesting at least a quarter final spot is in the future for the number 7 seed.

There have been studies that suggest new fathers gain a performance boost in sports after the birth of their first child. This may have had an effect, however Newton’s marked improvement in 2011 is more likely due to his leaving work and devoting himself full-time to darts.

Colin Lloyd is a former World number 1, and his best results were decidedly not in 2011. He has slipped to 15th in the PDC order of merit and is not the force he used to be. But neither is he a spent force. Indeed, Jaws reached the final of a Players Championship in the Netherlands only last week and was pipped at the post by the unstoppable (in Players Championships anyway) Gary Anderson. There is still some bite in the old shark.

Newton and Lloyd both lost in the third round of Saturday’s Players Championship in Dublin to Scott Rand and Steve Beaton respectively. So although Newton is having the year of years, and Lloyd is not what he was; both players are currently in very decent shape going into this contest. There is little value in a Newton to win outright bet and although Lloyd is unlikely to beat The Warrior his recent form suggests a spirited fight is in the offing; therefore a most 180s bet for Jaws at 11/4 with Sky Bet looks appealing.

Recommended Bet:

Colin Lloyd most 180s @ 11/4 with Sky Bet
