Whitlock withdrawal hands Henderson hope

Henderson will play the number one ranked player, Justin Pipe

Simon Whitlcok has been forced to withdraw from next week’s Players Championship Finals having failed to recover sufficiently from an ankle injury that kept him out of the Grand Slam of Darts.

Whitlock was ranked 16th in the Players Championship Order of Merit, therefore all those ranked below him move up one spot. That means John Henderson, ranked 33, will now feature in the Players Championship Finals at Doncaster Dome next weekend.

The format of the event means that Henderson will play the number one ranked player in the Players Championship Order of Merit, Justin Pipe. Pipe overtook Gary Anderson to gain the top spot following his run to the final of last Sunday’s event in Wigan.

Anderson did not feature in Wigan but will return to action in Doncaster, his opening round match will be against Michael van Gerwen.

Phil Taylor finished the season ranked seventh in the Order of Merit – largely down to entering fewer events than most players, and not any severe lapse in form – and will play Terry Jenkins in his opening round match.

Former champion Paul Nicholson finished the season ranked at number three and will play Steve Brown in his opening match, while Wes Newton, ranked four, will play Richie Burnett.
