Taylor triumphs in Dublin
Phil Taylor beat an inspired Michael van Gerwen to win Saturday’s Dublin Players Championship.
Van Gerwen beat Jamie Caven, Mark Webster, Gary Anderson and Mervyn King, amongst others, to qualify for his first ranking event final since August 2008. But he couldn’t quite go all the way as Taylor, fresh from his Championship League Group Two win, sealed the title with a 6-3 final win.
The Power began his day with a 6-2 win over Adam Hunt and a 6-1 triumph against Andy Smith to set up a grudge match with Paul Nicholson. The Asset went into the match high in confidence having won the Championship League Darts Group Three on Thursday but couldn’t produce his best darts and was ousted 6-3.
A narrow 6-5 win over Justin Pipe put Taylor through to the semis where he beat Scott Rand 6-2 before going on to win his third consecutive ranking title.
It was a disappointing day at the office for Raymond van Barneveld who lost in round one to Ian White. While Adrian Lewis and James Wade also failed to improve on their poor Championship League Darts form as they suffered opening round losses to Gary Welding and Roland Scholten respectively.
Barney, Lewis and Wade will have one more chance to improve their form ahead of the World Grand Prix when they line up for the Dublin Players Championship 2 tomorrow. Taylor will be hoping for more of the same.
