Stompe v Tabern: Co can stomp out Saint
Vast experience will be on show in the second round of the UK Open as Co Stompe and Alan Tabern face-off in the hope of a return to the stage on Friday.
Both are veterans of the game, but neither has been at their peak of late and find themselves sliding towards the very extreme of the top 32. A loss for either man on Thursday in Bolton could prove to be very damaging in terms of their rankings.
Tabern has reached the semi-finals in Bolton in the past, but it was all the way back in 2006 and his recent performances in the big tournaments have not lived up to those of the past. His last quarter-final in front of the television cameras was actually in this tournament but it was three years ago and although he has shown flashes in the Pro Tour events he has not shown too many signs of getting past the initial stages on the big stages.
Stompe hasn’t been away from the latter stages of competitions for as long as the Saint, but he did have a pretty lean 12 months last year with just a quarter-final at the RTL7 Masters to make note of.
In terms of form though, the UK Open can often be the competition during which players can get their seasons going and kick on to have a successful year. The two men having struggled over recent times could well be of little consequence if they can scrape a win and then get a favourable draw on Friday.
It’s one of those matches that is a toss of the coin really, even their relatively poor form is almost inseparable in the floor tournaments so far this year. Stompe just has the edge for me having won the last two matches between the two, and that is why he has been made narrow favourite.
