Mighty Mike storms to UK Open qualifier

The Dutchman averaged 108.03 in the final

Michael van Gerwen was in sensational form as he hit a nine-darter on his way to beating Dave Chisnall in the final of Sunday’s UK Open qualifier.

The Dutchman averaged 108.03 in the final as he cruised to a 6-1 victory over Chizzy, having already whitewashed Simon Whitlock in the semis and beaten Andy Hamilton 6-2 in the quarters.

“It's very special for me,” said Van Gerwen.

“To win a tournament with a nine-darter and a 170 finish is great. I know I can play like this but you have to do it when it counts in tournaments, and I'm very proud that I did today.

“In the last four games I played very well against four players who are all in the top 32 and brilliant players, so if you do that then you can win anything.”

Van Gerwen looked to be maturing towards the back end of last season and will hope that this year he can begin to realize some of the awesome talent that he quite clearly possesses.

The youngster is currently priced at odds of 125/1 to win the 2013 PDC World Championships.
