Championship League: John joins the Party
John Part, Robert Thornton and Mark Dudbridge join the Championship League Darts at Group Seven today. The trio will battle it out with Vincent van der Voort, Andy Smith, Steve Beaton, Kevin Painter and Alan Tabern for a place in Thursday’s Winners Group.
Part was slated to enter the tournament tomorrow at Group Eight but when Co Stompe withdrew from the competition the Canadian was promoted to Group Seven.
Simon Whitlock finally won through to the Winners Group at the sixth time of asking with a win over Van der Voort in the final of Group Six last Thursday. That means that for the first time in multiple Championship League groups we have a new favourite. It is Andy Smith, at odds of 9/2, whom the bookies expect to triumph today.
However, having watched the Pieman in earlier groups I feel that his performances, and sometimes results, have tapered off towards the end of the day. He tends to start very well but as the day progresses errors can creep in to his game.
In truth it should be a fairly closely contested group. If any one of these players produces their best darts then they are more than capable of winning the group. Part looks a solid bet at odds of 11/2, as does Van der Voort at the same price. If my arm was twisted I’d probably suggest the Dutchman, but as it is, today’s Championship League looks one to avoid in the betting.
