Championship League: Power surge at Crondon

It's difficult to make an argument against backing Taylor

Eight group winners from the past month of Championship League qualifiers meet at Crondon Park to day to battle it out for a £10,000 first prize.

Gary Anderson, Phil Taylor, Paul Nicholson, Mark Walsh, Mervyn King, Simon Whitlock and Steve Beaton are joined by Group Eight winner Dennis Priestley after the 61-year-old edged out Kevin Painter in yesterday’s final.

“I made it hard for myself but it's wonderful to get through,” said Priestely following his victory.

“Just to finish in the top four was an achievement and I had to battle all the way, but to defeat John and Kevin is a great achievement. I might have dropped out of the top 32, but this shows that there's plenty of like left in me yet.”

Taylor, unsurprisingly, goes into the tournament as the strong favourite at odds of Evens with Sky Bet, followed by Anderson at 10/3.

It’s difficult to make an argument against backing Taylor on recent form. He rarely looked troubled at the World Grand Prix after seeing off Peter Wright in a shaky opening round match, taking his third consecutive major title. Some might say that there is potential for him to be caught cold today having not played since lifting the title in Dublin, but the league format of the Championship League offers him ample time to blow off any cobwebs before the knockout stages.

There is no danger of Taylor not making it to the semis. Therefore, by backing him to win the Championship League you are essentially backing him to win two consecutive matches; his semi then the final. At odds of Evens that looks a very good bet.
