Barney soars to Barnsley double
Raymond van Barneveld won each of the weekend’s UK Open qualifiers as he defeated Andy Smith then Ian White in finals at the Barnsley Metrodome.
The Dutchman hit a nine-darter in beating Michael Barnard in the third round of Saturday’s event, then dispatched of Simon Whitlock and Terry Jenkins en route to the final.
“It was a good game against Michael Barnard – he'd beaten Colin Lloyd and Ronnie Baxter in our group – but I'm really pleased with the nine-darter,” said Barney on Saturday. “I'm working hard and it's paying off.”
There were no nine-dart heroics on Sunday, but some equally solid performances in beating Wes Newton, Dennis Priestley and Richie Burnett to reach the final where he defeated Ian White 6-2.
“Not many players win both tournaments in a weekend so I'm really proud,” added Barney on Sunday.
“That says a lot about the kind of player you are; I'm working out now in the gym, I feel fit, I feel awake and I feel confident.
"The first couple of games I wasn't pleased with but after that I gained confidence and the rest of the day was awesome. I'm really pleased to have won both finals.”
Van Barneveld will play Simon Whitlock in the Premier League this Thursday, with the Dutchman made the 6/4 outsider by bookmaker Sky Bet.
