Barney bounces back in Derby
Raymond van Barneveld beat John Part in the final of Saturday’s Players Championship event in Derby to claim his first individual PDC title in over three years.
Barney won the PDC World Cup of Darts alongside countryman Co Stompe in early December last year, but has not won an individual tournament since triumphing at the Open Holland Masters back in April 2008.
Ironically, it was a win over Stompe in the fourth round here that catapulted Barney towards the title. With the match tied at 5-5 and in a deciding leg Van Barneveld stepped in to take out 106 with Stompe waiting on 20.
A 6-5 win over Steve Farmer followed in the next round before he defeated the in-form Paul Nicholson 6-4 in the semis to book a date with Part in the final.
The Canadian, fresh from victory on home soil in last weekend’s Players Championship event, defeated Simon Whitlock in the semis and Gary Anderson – who had whitewashed Mark Dudbridge in the last 16 with a three-dart average of 123.5 – in the quarters to make it two final appearances in the last three PDC events.
But he couldn’t stay with the big Dutchman who took the title in style with a 156 checkout to round off a brilliant 12-darter and a 6-2 win.
