Anderson wins Championship League Group One

The Scot won six of his seven group stage matches

Gary Anderson came out on top after a fascinating day of darts at Crondon Park for the Championship League Darts Group One.

The Scot won six of his seven group stage matches – losing only to Phil Taylor – to finish second in the league table and book a semi-final date with Simon Whitlock. There, Anderson came from 4-2 behind to win the final four legs of the match and win 6-4, booking a date with Wes Newton in the final.

If Anderson’s journey to the final was dramatic Newton’s was theatrical. He beat Mark Webster 6-4 in his penultimate group game to clinch fourth spot and a semi-final against Taylor. At the final-four stage he took a 2-0 lead against The Power before the 15-time World Champion fired back to take a 3-2 lead. They traded blows in the ensuing legs and a decider was required to split the pair at 5-5.

Taylor had the all-important first throw in the decider, but that wasn’t going to stop Newton recording his first career win over Taylor. Newton hit an opening 140 and followed it with scores of 96 and 125 before taking out 140 for the match.

Unfortunately for him, he was unable to repeat his semi-final heroics in the final. Like so many players in the past, he fell at the next hurdle having beaten Taylor as Anderson cruised to a 6-1 win to book his place in the Championship League Winners Group.

It was a disappointing day for Adrian Lewis and Terry Jenkins as they were eliminated from the competition having finished in the bottom two places in Group One. Neither player could find a win in their opening five games, and when they met in the final group game of the day it was Lewis who avoided the wooden spoon when he beat The Bull 6-0.

Championship League Group Two kicks off at 1030 BST tomorrow morning with Paul Nicholson, Andy Hamilton and Mervyn King joining the action.
