Anderson takes fifth title
Gary Anderson claimed his fifth PDC Pro Tour title of the season with victory over Peter Wright in the final of Sunday’s Players Championship event in Derby.
The win moved Anderson back to the top of the Players Championship Order of Merit - having been previously dislodged by John Part following the Canadian’s run of good form.
Anderson gained revenge for Saturday’s quarterfinal loss to Part by beating him 6-5 at the semi-finals stage on Sunday. The Scot was 5-4 behind before hitting two 180s in an 11-darter to level the match then another maximum on his way to a 14-darter to seal victory.
Having already defeated Dennis Priestley, Mark Webster, John O’Shea and Denis Ovens en route to the final Anderson then wrapped up his fifth tour title of the year with a 6-2 win over Peter Wright in the final.
Saturday’s winner Raymond van Barneveld was a surprise 6-5 first round loser to Mick Todd, while Kirk Shepherd reached his first quarter-final of Pro Tour event in over 18 months.
The players now take a couple of weeks break before heading to Holland for the Nuland Players Championship on September 24 & 25. The double-header will be the final chance for players to improve their rankings before the qualifiers for the World Grand Prix are confirmed.
