Richie Rich to hit the Jackpot
Friday evening sees the overwhelming favourite for the tournament take to the stage in the form of Scott Waites but he has a real battle in prospect for a place in the last four, as do the two men competing in the other quarter-final.
Waites has been thoroughly impressive so far, as many expected him to be, dropping just one set in two matches and totally dominating them both. He was the favourite before a dart was thrown and with other big name tumbling out and with his performances being as good as anyone in the competition he is now a very short price to win his first world championship.
There is another bang in form man standing in his way though in the form of Paul Jennings who like Waites has lost just a single set in the tournament so far. Jenno got to this stage last year but was unseeded coming into the event so had a tough draw first up against Ross Montgomery; he came through this with flying colours though and then strolled to a 4-0 win over Jason Cullen in round two.
Scotty 2 Hotty is a serious step up in class from Cullen though as a best price of 2/7 on a Waites win suggests. Jennings is in the habit of winning on the Lakeside stage though and he won’t be capitulating against the favourite. He gave Wesley Harms a very difficult evening at this stage 12 months ago and I expect him to do the same to Waites. The Yorkshireman will win it, but it won’t be easy and the 5/4 from Sky Bet on over 7.5 sets looks pretty good.
The other quarter-final sees two young pups of the BDO scene battling it out to be top dog as Jan Dekker faces Richie George. Dekker has been here before having reached the semis in 2011 but it is unknown territory for Richie Rich who is on debut at Lakeside this year.
George has looked good though on his first outing on the biggest stage coming through two tight contests with Dave Prins and Jimmy Hendriks. He was especially good under pressure against the Dutchman as he scrapped away in a tight match, hitting eight maximums along the way and showing nerves of steel as he hit the match winning double with his first dart.
Dekker has been in even tighter bouts if anything winning both his matches by a single set and he will certainly be battle hardened by now. It is he who is favourite to progress to the final four but only marginally at a best price of 4/5 whilst George is evens in places but out at 13/10 with Boyle Sports.
Both men are very confident in their own abilities and won’t wilt under the pressure from their opponent. This could easily go all the way to five sets and one man’s luck is about to run out and it may well just be Dekker’s. There is nothing in it really but George looks very solid and may well punish mistakes more than the men Dekker has beaten already. He looks good value at 13/10.
