Players Championships: Anderson the man to watch in Wigan

Away from the glamour of the Premier League there are two Players Championship events this weekend in Wigan with crucial prize money on the line and we can expect Gary Anderson to keep up his excellent recent form.

The Flying Scotsman has already won two of the first four Players Championship competitions this season along with a UK Open qualifier and the German Darts Championship. He is also performing well in the Premier League and Thursday night’s victory over Peter Wright kept him in with a great chance of making the play-offs.

This stunning return to form sees him go into the weekend’s tournaments as third favourite at 12/1 with Sky Bet and given his success already this year this looks to be a very decent price. He fired in an average of just over 100 against Wright on Thursday and if he can keep that up over the weekend then he should win at least one of the events.

The favourite for both is Michael van Gerwen at 11/4 with Sporting Bet for each. The world champion is in similarly brilliant form with two floor wins and the Dutch Darts Masters to his name already this year. He is also dominating the Premier League, sitting atop the table after 10 games.

It would be no surprise to anyone if MVG won one or even both of the weekend events but with such a large and talented field he is not great value at those odds.

Phil Taylor is next in line at 3/1 with Boyle Sports but, in truth, he is something of an unpredictable force in the floor events. He can turn up and wipe the floor with the competition as he did in Crawley at the end of March and in a UK Open qualifier in February but he can also suffer surprise losses early on so, again, at a short price he is not tempting to back.

A more profitable player to back could well be Dave Chisnall who has not been at his best on the Pro Tour this year but can beat anyone on his day. Chizzy has not been past a semi-final this year but has hit two 9-darters so his game is there, he probably just needs a bit of luck with draws.

The man from St Helens has won eight tour events over the last two years so it is only a matter of time before he wins in 2014 and at 25/1 with Sporting Bet he looks an excellent price to break his duck this weekend.
