Pipe the man to drain Thornton
The second day of the Grand Slam of Darts sees the winners from Saturday face-off and the losers meet each other so it is often a difficult one to call with either both players full of confidence or lacking in it somewhat; nonetheless there are some great prices to take advantage of.
The first is in the afternoon session as two of the world’s top 16 collide in Justin Pipe and Robert Thornton with the former going in as the underdog. Whilst Thornton could whitewash an under-performing Mark Walsh on Saturday at a canter, Pipe had to be in top form to see off Andy Hamilton 5-2 and was very impressive indeed.
This one has every chance of going all the way and there is very little between the two. Thornton will not be able to keep up his spectacular finishing whereas Pipe can keep up his very impressive average of over 96 so it is he who looks the best value at 6/5 with Boyle Sports.
Another potential upset, going on Saturday’s performances is Michael Smith taking on BDO world champ Scott Waites. Smith was sensational in defeating Dave Chisnall, firing in a 103 average whilst Waites never really got out of second gear in his win over Ted Hankey. There was 15 points difference in their averages on Saturday and obviously if that is repeated then there is only one winner.
There is little chance of that happening with Waites more than capable of upping his game for the occasion but it does mean that Smith represents tremendous value at 11/8 with Bet365 because anything like his first match performance will see him claim victory.
Finally, there is hope for Stuart Kellett on Sunday evening despite the hammering he received from Phil Taylor in his opening contest. KO Kellett has had a bit of a rough time of it on TV this year, being handed some very tough early draws but he is an excellent player and will be able to show it tonight against Kevin Painter.
The Artist was pretty abject in his defeat to Paul Nicholson on Saturday and if he performs like that again then Kellett has every chance of picking up a rare stage win. KO is 11/8 with Sky Bet and is definitely worth backing at that price.
