On-song Barney to push Taylor
There are five tasty looking tussles in the Premier League on Thursday night but none tastier than the clash between Phil Taylor and Raymond van Barneveld with both in top form heading into Birmingham.
Barney may not be top of the table but he has arguably been the best performer in this Premier League having not lost since week two and claimed victory in each of his last four matches. Given this he looks a very generous best price of 10/3 with Sky Bet to win a fifth straight game on Thursday.
He is playing Taylor though and his record against the Power is not a good one in this competition. Barney has never downed his great rival in the Premier League ever since his debut in the tournament in 2006. He has picked up some draws, that being the result last time they met, but it is this disappointing history that explains his lengthy price. Taylor, thanks to his dominance over the Dutchman is available at just 8/13 with Stan James.
Van Barneveld may not be able to beat Taylor on the night but he certainly can with a +2.5 handicap to his name given the form he is in. Barney is available at 8/11 with Bet Victor under those circumstances and that looks a decent bet.
Hoping to steal the show will be Michael van Gerwen and Gary Anderson who could well produce the most entertaining match of the night. It was a cracking match last time they met in this competition with MVG winning 7-5 and with both playing well it should be another great battle this time around.
Mighty Mike will probably win this one but a safer option is to back plenty of maximums from these two. Anderson may not be as reliable as he once was in this market but MVG is and over 6.5 between them looks good at 10/11 with Bet365.
A weirdly priced match is the one between Peter Wright and Adrian Lewis with the latter going in as favourite despite losing his last four games. Wright had been struggling but battled to victory last week against Robert Thornton and there is no question that he is the value bet at 11/8 with Bet Victor to defeat the out-of-form Lewis.
The first match of the evening is between Robert Thornton and Dave Chisnall and despite the Scot’s elimination from the competition he is certainly still a threat to Chizzy. We saw how much Simon Whitlock’s form improved after his relegation was confirmed.
These two have a very even record and it should be a close one whoever wins. Over 11.5 legs looks a good price at 5/4 with Sky Bet.
Last on will be Chisnall and Taylor returning to the stage to face each other. These second contests of the night are unpredictable but Taylor is the one to back with a -2.5 handicap at 4/5 with William Hill.
