O'Shea and Adams to serve up some quality
Tuesday afternoon features arguably the two most popular people at Lakeside this year and a pair that have played in seven World Championship finals between them as Tony O’Shea takes on Martin Adams in the first round.
It is a clash that is fit to grace the final but it will have to make do with the last 32 and it is the Silverback who is the odds-on favourite to win this one at 8/11 with Sporting Bet. He has had much the better year on the tour but Adams looked pretty good in his preliminary round win over David Cameron and is set to give his old foe a real game.
This could go really close but it is O’Shea who should come through it and he should be backed at 8/11. Another tempter though is over 6.5 180s which is available at 8/11 with Stan James; these are two of the modern greats and should be very capable of serving up plenty of quality.
The tournament favourite is also in action on Tuesday with Stephen Bunting going in as a 1/16 shot against American qualifier Jim Widmayer. It is the lowest price of anyone in the first round draw and is well deserved after the stellar year The Bullet has had on tour, however, after an impressive prelim win over Garry Thompson the American should not be underestimated.
Bunting will certainly win this one but the man from New York is well capable of pinching a set and over 3.5 is available at 6/4 with Bet365 which looks very decent value.
Behind Bunting in the betting is number two seed Jamie Wilson who on the face of things does not have it easy in round one against 2012 champ Christian Kist but in truth it should be a comfortable one for the Yorkshireman.
Kist may have produced a pretty decent average in his preliminary win over Hiroaki Shimizu but he has done precious little on the big stage since his huge win two years ago. Wilson, in comparison, has done plenty and is by far the better player. The Englishman is favourite and great value with a -1.5 handicap at 11/10 with Paddy Power.
Elsewhere, Scott Mitchell looks good value at 10/11 with Sky Bet to see-off Paul Hogan. Mitchell broke his first round exit curse last year at Lakeside and won a few tournaments in 2013 so will be confident coming into this one against the 50-year-old.
Jim Williams may be lacking in experience but he has been impressive on the tour in 2013 and looks good value to beat perennial first round loser Dave Prins at 3/5 with Bwin whilst Glen Durrant is no value to beat qualifier Mike Day which he will do.
