MVG to return to form in Championship League
The Championship League returns for Group Four of the competition at Crondon Park in Essex on Tuesday and it is Michael van Gerwen who is the favourite to progress through to the winners group from the eight men involved.
It will be MVG’s fourth crack at qualification but it is no surprise that he is the favourite to finally make it through a group stage as he is the only man in the top six in the world competing on Tuesday. Mighty Mike is a best price of 2/1 with Bet365 to emerge victorious in Stock and he looks a pretty good bet at that price after he looked good in the Grand Prix before a premature exit.
The man who showed him that exit door in Dublin was Dave Chisnall and he is also competing on Tuesday but his state of mind has to be brought into question after his embarrassing demolition at the hands of Phil Taylor in the Grand Prix final just a couple of days previously.
Chizzy did seem to take the 6-0 battering in reasonably good spirits and it could be exactly what he needs to get straight back on the horse but there are just too many doubts surrounding him to put money down with any confidence even at a decent price of 4/1with Sky Bet.
These two are joined by a motley bunch all of whom are capable of claiming a group win but also just as likely to crash and burn. The only one of the other six men to make it past round one at the Grand Prix was Gary Anderson who did look pretty good in Dublin before his quarter-final defeat to Taylor but he, as always, is a bit too flaky to back at 6/1 with Betfred.
What looks a really good bet in Group Four is for Mervyn King to make it through to the semi-finals. He may have gone out early at the Grand Prix but he didn’t play badly and has been pretty good form away from the TV cameras so far this year. He is 6/4 with Sky Bet to make it into the semi-finals and that could prove tremendous value.
