MVG looks to make it a Euro hat-trick in Gibraltar
There is another £20,000 on the line for the winner of the Gibraltar Darts Trophy this weekend as the fifth European Tour event of the year comes round in the British territory off the south of Spain.
These competitions on the continent are of huge significance now they have that winner’s cheque attached to them and everyone involved will be going at full throttle to lift the trophy.
The only big name missing from the tournament is Raymond van Barneveld who has opted against a trip to the Mediterranean coast and leaves the draw ever so slightly more open.
Barney’s decision not to compete does not affect the duopoly that has taken control of darts betting in recent months though as Michael van Gerwen and Phil Taylor remain the clear favourites for success in Gibraltar.
MVG has won the last two events on the Euro Tour and as such goes into this one as favourite at a best of 9/4 with Sporting Bet. Few would argue with this price given his form so far this year and the fact he won the most recent floor event with a victory in the Players Championship in Crawley on Sunday taking his winnings solely on the Pro Tour this year to an incredible £106,600!
One man who will disagree with the price though is the Power who is available at 3/1 with Bwin. Taylor knocked MVG out of the UK Open but away from the television cameras this year the world number one has been pretty poor by his high standards and has shown little to suggest that he will emerge victorious in Gibraltar. Clearly you can never write off the greatest player of all time but he isn’t too tempting at 3/1 before a dart has been thrown.
As ever the rest of the field are some way behind the leading pair in terms of odds with the closest being James Wade at 16/1 with Betfred and given his paucity of success away from the TV cameras he is not an appealing bet.
Of the chasing pack the standout bet seems to be Wes Newton who is only one of three men to have won on the Euro Tour this year and was in great form the weekend just gone in Crawley. The Warrior saw off MVG on his way to a runners-up spot on Saturday and then made it to the last eight on Sunday to complete a very profitable weekend. At 33/1 with William Hill the European Darts Trophy champion looks a fabulous price.
The other man catching the eye of late has been Peter Wright who claimed the Players Championship event on Saturday with a stunning performance over the day. This followed up the run to the semi-finals of the UK Open and he could be starting to become a real force in the big events. He is still available at 40/1 with Boyle Sports for the title in Gibraltar and that could well be worth an each-way punt.
