MVG continues sparkling form
Michael van Gerwen won his third consecutive UK Open qualifier on Saturday, before losing to eventual winner Robert Thornton at the semi-finals stage of Sunday’s event.
Van Gerwen beat fellow Premier League stars Gary Anderson and Simon Whitlock en route to Saturday’s final where he beat youngster Michael Smith 6-2 to make it a hat-trick of UK Open qualifier titles.
“It's always nice to win a tournament like this and I'm delighted,” said van Gerwen. “I know I'm playing well and I've shown everyone again today.
"I was strong from the beginning but I played a lot of good players, like Simon, Gary Anderson and Peter Wright. I'm full of confidence and I'm taking that into my games at the moment.”
The Dutchman looked like he would go on to make it four titles in Sunday’s event after beating Adrian Lewis and Richie Burnett early in the day, but was thwarted by an in-form Thornton at the semis; the Scot then going on to beat Jamie Caven 6-4 in the final and claim the £6,000 prize money.
