MVG claims 2014 world title
Michael van Gerwen claimed the 2014 PDC World Championship on New Year’s Day as he saw-off Peter Wright in a cracking contest and consequently the joint favourite for the forthcoming Premier League.
The Dutchman became the youngest world champion in the organisation’s history with his 7-4 victory over Snakebite and seen as Phil Taylor was five years his senior when he won the first of his 16 world titles there is already talk of MVG surpassing The Power’s record although that is a long way off. Van Gerwen is already the hot favourite for next year’s World Championship at a best price of 15/8 with Sky Bet.
The more pressing issue though is the Premier League which begins in February and MVG goes in as joint favourite alongside Taylor at 2/1 with Boyle Sports. The Dutchman is the defending champion and The Power was last year’s runner-up so there is no surprise to this despite Taylor’s second round exit from the Alexandra Palace.
There was plenty of debate over who should be in the field for the travelling tournament this year and whilst James Wade has been omitted for health reasons, Andy Hamilton can count himself very unlucky to miss out having reached the UK Open final in June. The debutants this year are Dave Chisnall and the world finalist Wright who are certainly deserving as they find themselves fifth and seventh in the world respectively after the World Championships.
Chisnall is not expected to make a great impact on the Premier League after a disappointing World Championship and is available at 33/1 with Ladbrokes but after such an impressive tournament at the Alexandra Palace Wright goes in at 20/1 with Bet Victor ahead of the likes of Raymond van Barneveld and Gary Anderson. The remaining places are given to Adrian Lewis, Simon Whitlock, Robert Thornton and most surprisingly Wes Newton.
There are a number of specials for the forthcoming year now available with the most intriguing being which player will claim the most majors in 2014, these being the Premier League, UK Open, World Matchplay, World Grand Prix, Grand Slam of Darts, Players Championship & PDC World Championship 2015. It is expected to be a straight shootout between MVG and Taylor with the latter the favourite at 11/8 with William Hill and Mighty Mike available at 6/4.
