MVG can drain Power on opening night
The 2014 Premier League kicks off in some style on Thursday in Liverpool with the standout match being a repeat of last year’s final between Michael van Gerwen and Phil Taylor, a match in which we expect MVG to triumph again.
The Dutchman prospered in an absolute classic last May in London and having been crowned as world champion since then he will be returning to this competition with his confidence at an all-time high.
Taylor’s mental state may be quite the opposite after exiting the Ally Pally in the second round and debuting brand new darts on Merseyside this week. It is now three straight years that the Power has failed to win on the opening night of the Premier League and there is every chance that run will continue this time around. MVG is 13/10 with Bet365 and should be backed.
The first match of the night sees debutant Dave Chisnall take on Robert Thornton who impressed on his first appearance in the tournament last year. Chizzy is in the event thanks to his run to the World Grand Prix final in 2013 but his crushing defeat there to Taylor hurt him and he is yet to bounce back from it.
The Thorn is such a steady performer and was excellent throughout the Premier League last year, proving he can score with the best and when left on double top he rarely misses. The Scotsman looks a very generous best price indeed at 7/5 with Boyle Sports.
The other debutant this year is Peter Wright who is coming off his fabulous run to the World Championship final. He kicks off his campaign against Wes Newton on Thursday and should start with some success. The Warrior struggled in the Premier League last year and it was a surprise to many that he retained his place in the competition.
Snakebite is still on a high and has the experience and composed nature not to be phased by his debut on this stage. The debutant can be backed at EVENS with Paddy Power and should be done so with confidence.
A contest that could really steal the show is between Gary Anderson and Raymond van Barneveld after the Flying Scotsman kicked off his 2014 with a win at the German Darts Championship. The 2011 Premier League winner is clearly in fine form and he can beat anyone in the world when he is in the mood.
Anderson is tempting to back but what is more appealing is a pile of 180s being hit as this should be a real high quality affair. Over 6.5 is available at 6/5 with Bet365 which in a clash of around 11 legs looks very feasible between these two.
Finally there is a tricky game to call between Adrian Lewis and Simon Whitlock which the former is going into as the odds-on favourite, although probably should be avoided. These two met on opening night last year and Lewis had a shocker going down 7-3. In fact Jackpot has managed just one draw and three losses in the last three Premier League meetings between these two.
If Lewis really turns up then he will be very difficult to stop but anything short of that then the Wizard looks great value at 9/4 with Sporting Bet and should be backed.
