German Darts Trophy: Potential early upsets
As ever in these European Tour events there are an awful lot of heavy odds-on favourites but there are also plenty of bigger names that can easily be upset by local competitors or plucky qualifiers from the UK.
A prime example of the latter is James Richardson who takes on Richie Burnett in round one in Germany and has every chance of springing a surprise. Burnett on his day is superb but these days are too few and far between for him to challenge regularly at the latter stages of tournaments and he is always a candidate for an early exit with his erratic performances.
Richardson has not really kicked on since his World Championship win over Barney a couple of years ago but he is still a very solid player and if the Prince of Wales is not on top form then Richardson will capitalise. The underdog is available at 11/8 with Ladbrokes and is well worth backing at that price.
Another potential profitable bet is Nigel Heydon to defeat Colin Osborne in round one. Ozzy has not been anywhere near his best for some years now and is a shaky performer on the big stage. Heydon does not have a lot of experience in front of the live audience himself but with both men set to struggle there is very little between them.
The man known as the Undertaker is available at 6/5 with Coral and could easily prove an excellent price against the former UK Open finalist Osborne.
Finally, the player who could cause the biggest upset of the first round is Steve Brown who faces Gary Anderson on the German stage. The Bomber has suffered in form in the last year or so but looks to be coming back towards his best in the last couple of months with some creditable performances at Players Championships including hitting a 9-darter just three months ago.
The Flying Scotsman is obviously as good as any on top form but much like Burnett is far too prone to a bad performance and is often worth backing against. Brown is a huge price at 28/11 with Bwin and could prove excellent value against the Scotsman who suffers from double trouble.
