Favourites to have their way in Gibraltar quarters
There are some pretty hot favourites in the quarter-finals at the Gibraltar Darts Trophy and whilst some certainly justify their incredibly short odds, others will not have it so easy.
Phil Taylor is a best of 1/6 to see off Steve Beaton and there is very little to suggest that he won’t do just that so that one is probably worth leaving alone unless you are just sticking the Power in an accumulator.
The world number two Michael van Gerwn is facing Adrian Lewis and as is now customary MVG is heavy odds-on favourite to progress. It looked like Mighty Mike might have a bit of a problem facing Jackpot after he was pushed all the way at the World Championship and then Lewis won the first of their Premier League matches this season but the Dutchman has recovered well and beaten the double world champ three times in a row since that Premier League loss.
Lewis has come through some tough matches so far but has not really been anywhere near his peak and is unlikely to end his losing streak against MVG. It will be close as their matches often are but it is a brave soul that doesn’t back Mighty Mike. He is a best price of 2/5 with Boyle Sports and he could well be worth sticking in an accumulator as well.
Kevin Painter goes into his last eight as a 1/2 favourite against Jamie Lewis but this is very hard on the young Welshman who has been thoroughly impressive over the last couple of days in Gibraltar. Seeing off Robert Thornton in round two was eye-catching enough but to whitewash Steve Brown earlier this Sunday afternoon should really cause people to take notice.
The Artist himself has been playing well though, especially in beating James Wade in the last 16 so it is still he who should go through from this one. The uber-confident Lewis will not be disposed of easily though given his fantastic form and it should go to 10 legs at least.
The remaining quarter-final clash is set to be by far the tightest of the lot as Kim Huybrechts takes on Dave Chisnall in a contest between two of the very best players in the event thus far. The Belgian banged in a near 103 average to beat Peter Wright on Sunday afternoon but then Chizzy managed over 111 to beat Andy Hamilton and set this match up.
Unsurprisingly after that kind of performance it is no surprise that Chisnall is favourite at a best price of 5/6 with Sporting Bet whilst the Hurricane is behind at 11/10 with Sky Bet. The Englishman has a very encouraging record against Huybrechts as well so he is a worthy favourite but it could certainly still go either way with the Belgian performing exceptionally as well. Chisnall should just shade it but there shouldn’t be too much money going on him.
A treble on Painter, Taylor and MVG could well be the best bet this afternoon and Sky Bet will pay 1.4/1 on that which looks well worth investing in.
