Expect epic contests on Friday night
There are two clear favourites heading into Friday night’s two quarter-final clashes at the BDO World Championship and although it may well be the men with the shortest odds who progress, a pair of close contests is in prospect.
First up is Jan Dekker against, strangely, one of the surprise packages of the tournament Martin Adams. It is odd to say that a three-time world champion is a shock quarter-final competitor but so poor has his form been over the last 12-18 months that he was odds-on for a first round loss. He has come through brilliantly though, dropping just two sets in three matches thus far.
This rejuvenation sees him go in as the 1/2 favourite with Boyle Sports with the Dutchman some way behind at 7/4 with Sky Bet. That is a bit harsh on Dekker who performs at a consistent level and has a good record in the World Championships. You know what to expect from the 23-year-old and that is a mid-80s average which will not blow away quality competition but will always have him in games.
Dekker is rarely on the wrong end of a thrashing; two of his three World Championship defeats in the past have been by one set and his only other meeting with Adams on the big stage was won 3-2 by Wolfie. He actually looks very decent value at 7/4 but a safer bet is over 7.5 sets which is available at 10/11 with Bet365 and seems an excellent price with both men playing well and at a similar level.
The last quarter-final of the tournament sees James Wilson go in as the strong favourite to see-off Alan Norris, but if Chuck can continue his fine form then this is no foregone conclusion. The Yorkshireman is a tiny best price of 4/9 with Paddy Power whilst Norris is out at 15/8 with Boyle Sports; given he has already knocked out Scott Waites and Glen Durrant, conceding just one set along the way, this is a very generous offer.
Consecutive 93 averages from Norris have been very impressive but Wilson has also looked good in his two battles thus far, especially in round one as he eliminated Christian Kist. He did show a little fragility against Scott Mitchell though and that will be spurring Norris on.
Again these are two men playing well who are giving little away and in a race to five, over 7.5 sets looks a great price at 5/4 with Sky Bet when it is odds-on elsewhere.
