Eccles will be Dazzled by Fitton
The Monday session at Lakeside kicks off with a potentially high quality affair between veterans Darryl Fitton and Tony Eccles with the Dazzler the rightful favourite against a man who regularly struggles in the early rounds.
Both these men are performing in their 12th World Championship so have plenty of experience but Eccles has gone out in the first round an incredible seven times across his performances in both the BDO and the PDC. Last time he went beyond the initial contest was in 2009 when he lost in the second round.
Fitton has had his fair share of first round exits as well but he has had a good year on the circuit with plenty of semi-final runs which is why he come into this one as the fifth seed at the ripe old age of 51. The Dazzler is simply the better player, especially on the big stage; he is a heavy odds-on favourite as a result and should be backed with a -1.5 handicap at EVENS with Sky Bet.
There is an all-Dutch affair next up between Jan Dekker and Benito van de Pas which could be one of the real gems of the first round. Both have played plenty of tournaments this year having been involved in the PDC Challenge Tour as well as the regular BDO circuit. Van de Pas may have failed to go beyond the first round in his two Lakeside appearances so far but he has lost by the odd set each time so he does know what he is doing on the big stage.
Dekker has a very good record in the World Championships; this should be a cracking contest and there should be some quality on show. Over 5.5 180s is available at 4/5 with Bet365 and that looks a good price.
Two preliminary winners are in action on Monday as Michael Meaney takes on Ross Montgomery and Madars Razma meets Geert De Vos. Of the two it is Meaney who has the better chance of causing an upset after an impressive 3-0 win in the prelim. Montgomery has a pretty poor record in the World Championships and Meaney looks good value with a +1.5 handicap at 42/41 with Bwin.
Razma was less impressive as he scraped past John Michael although his fluent action suggests if he finds a good rhythm he could be dangerous. The Belgian De Vos has had an impressive year though and should have too much for him. De Vos with a -1.5 handicap at 7/10 with Bwin looks a good price.
