Dutch Masters: Barney can delight home fans
The incredibly busy schedule of the PDC tour does not let up this weekend as one day after the end of the Championship League in Essex the Dutch Masters begins in Veldhoven.
Unsurprisingly some have chosen to give the tournament a miss with the most notable absentee being the man who claimed the Championship League title on Thursday, Phil Taylor. With his world number one status very firmly concreted he does not tend to bother with too many weekend events and especially after his win at Crondon Park he will enjoy a couple of days off.
This leaves the man he beat in the final in Essex as the clear favourite for the tournament and many will believe there is little reason to suggest Michael van Gerwen will not be celebrating come Sunday night. His run to the final on Thursday showed a return to form as he had not been at his best of late and with Taylor out of the picture anyone will struggle to stop him in his home country. MVG is 5/2 with Bet365 and could easily prove very profitable at that price.
There does have to be some question marks over the players that competed in Essex just yesterday and are playing again on Friday in Holland and if they will be properly prepared for their matches. The hectic schedule could prove a hindrance to MVG and allow one of the men who have had a few days off to prosper.
The most tempting player to back in the field is probably Raymond van Barneveld who has proved this year that he can still do it away from the television cameras and he will want to put on an impressive performance in front of his home crowd. Barney is available at 14/1 with Bet Victor and he certainly looks backing at that price.
On the look-out for a long shot it seems like Mervyn King could provide the each-way value in Veldhoven. He has been to two finals on the European Tour already this season including the most recent one last month and although he has not lifted a trophy he is worth backing each-way at 40/1 with Sky Bet.
