Dolan & Thornton to cause upsets

Dolan managed one of the better averages of yesterday's play

There were always going to be some surprises on day one of the Cash Converters Players Championship Finals, but none were bigger than Wayne Jones demolishing our pick for the tournament and number one seed Dave Chisnall 6-0.

The first match on Friday’s evening session had to be seen to be believed as the tournament outsider strolled to a whitewash victory with Chizzy barely getting a shot at a double. The Wanderer now faces Peter Wright in round two who won a match on the opposite end of the tight scale first up as he edged out Colin Lloyd 6-5. Neither player regularly makes it past the first round of televised tournaments so there isn’t much to choose between them on Saturday afternoon. Wright has been playing the better darts of late despite Jones’ impressive victory yesterday and he should just edge it although it will be a tight one.

First up this afternoon in Justin Pipe against Brendan Dolan and this could be another upset victory for the Irishman after his win against James Wade yesterday. Dolan managed one of the better averages of yesterday’s play with 93.5 and his confidence will be soaring after knocking out the Machine. Pipe played well enough to beat Colin Osborne but it was hardly a classic and Dolan could just be shaping up as a dark horse to reach the latter stages. At 7/4 the History Maker looks a good price with Bet Victor.

Michael Smith broke his TV duck yesterday after sneaking past Ian White 6-5 but he faces another very stern test as he meets Kim Huybrechts in round two this afternoon. The Belgian, like many on Friday, wasn’t at his very best, but his finishing was impressive and that is what got him through. He is a strong favourite to win this one, but the win for Smith could do him the power of good and we know how dangerous he is when he gets going due to his floor performances. Huybrechts may still take it, but it will be a closer match than some bookies think as over 16.5 legs is 11/10 with Sky Bet.

The highlight of the afternoon session should be the all-Scottish affair between Gary Anderson and Robert Thornton. Both were thoroughly impressive in round one, which can’t be said about many other players, and this should be another match of the highest quality as one Scotsman is guaranteed a place in the last eight. The Thorn has been on top form for some months now and showed no sign of fading as he averaged a shade under a ton in demolishing Mark Walsh and with him being second favourite he is great value to pick up another win. He was our each-way pick at 50/1 before the tournament so I’ll stick with him and suggest the 13/10 with Boylesports on the Thorn making yet another major quarter-final this year.
