Bunting triumphs at Lakeside
Stephen Bunting became the 2014 BDO world champion on Sunday evening after a 7-4 victory over Alan Norris in a cracking contest on the Lakeside stage.
After a tense opening session which saw the pair finish level at 3-3 it was the Bullet who put his foot on the accelerator and raced towards the finish line. The quality was high with both men averaging over 92 for the first time in a final since 2010 when Martin Adams edged out Dave Chisnall.
Bunting has been immediately installed as the favourite to win next year’s event at a best price of just 7/4 with Bet Victor but intriguingly he has also been made the fourth favourite to win the PDC World Championship at a best price of 25/1 with Sky Bet.
The man from St Helens is now a full time darts player and having won everything of significance in the BDO there is little reason for him not to jump ship in search of the far superior prize money. He has already performed in the UK Open and openly admitted he has been tempted by the PDC; with a tour card freely on offer to him it would be of no surprise for him to change allegiance.
One who has already made the switch is Christian Kist who will be vying to win a PDC tour card at Q School this week in Wigan. The Lipstick will come with a big reputation having won the 2012 Lakeside championship but is out at 100/1 with Bwin to win the 2015 PDC title.
Going the other way are Co Stompe and Ted Hankey who return to the BDO after largely unsuccessful stints in the PDC. The Dutchman has been made a best price of 40/1 with Bet Victor to claim the 2015 BDO World Championship whilst the Count, who has twice won the Lakeside title previously, is the same price of 40/1 with Bwin.
