Barney the next to fall to Mighty Mike
Undoubtedly the best two players of the tournament will face each other tonight in the final of the Grand Slam of Darts as Raymond van Barneveld looks to put a stop to the unbelievable run of form of Michael van Gerwen.
Mighty Mike came into this competition on a wave of confidence and is still riding high having not only won every single game he’s been in, but absolutely dominated some huge names along the way.
Averages in three figures in four of his six contests, including all there of his knockout matches has meant that his opponents can’t get close to him, and although Barney has not been far off that standard, he may also struggle to keep up with the youngster if he stays at that level.
It’s been an absolute pleasure seeing van Barneveld playing something like his A-game on television again after what has seemed like forever, and during his hugely impressive semi-final win over Andy Hamilton he looked like he was thoroughly enjoying himself which is a rare thing from the great man these days.
Barney goes into this one as a distant second favourite though at 3/1 in places, as ever since Michael saw off Phil Taylor in the second round he has been everyone’s pick to lift the trophy. The more experienced man has a very favourable record against his young adversary though and knocked him out of the European Championship just a couple of months ago.
It is near impossible to see van Gerwen losing on the form he has shown throughout this event and for the last couple of months, despite the brilliance of Barney. It would be lovely to think we are in for an epic of a final, and of course it could happen, but it is much more likely that van Gerwen will blow his compatriot away as he has done to everyone else he has faced of late.
