A little bit of history repeating
There are four men remaining in the 2013 BDO World Championship but the bookies can only see one winner as Scott Waites is now odds-on across the board to lift his first world title on Sunday evening.
First though he must overcome one of the revelations of the tournament Richie George who has battled through three of the tightest matches imaginable to make it to the final four on debut. His quarter-final contest with Jan Dekker was the closest of the lot as he eventually squeezed through with a 5-4 win after an epic encounter that saw him average more than five points less than his defeated opponent.
George has proved that averages don’t always matter in this game but they will on Saturday night when he takes on Waites. The Yorkshireman is regularly achieving the magical 90 mark and his 92.16 in the last eight was simply too much for Paul Jennings to keep up with. He has been very consistent of around that standard over the week and will almost certainly produce the same kind of performance against George which will be too much for the youngster to deal with.
The bookies see this one as so one sided that it is not easy to find much value in it as even on the handicap Waites is odds-on. This might still be the best way to go though with Sky Bet offering the best price at 10/11 with Waites -3.5. George has played well this tournament but Waites is too much of a step up for him and he could well be on the wrong end of a heavy defeat.
The other semi-final will be a much tighter affair as Tony O’Shea and Wesley Harms prepare for a repeat of their final four clash from last year. Their epic encounter in 2012 finished 6-5 in favour of the Englishman and there is every chance that we could see a repeat this year with both men in excellent form.
Both O’Shea’s and Harms’ wins in the last eight were arguably the performances of the competition so far as they defeated Robbie Green and Darryl Fitton respectively with stunning displays of scoring along the way. O’Shea is the favourite going into this one but Harms has every chance of pinching it if he can keep his level of performance at what it has been over his first three matches.
What is for sure is that this is going to go a long way and whilst it is odds-on in places Paddy Power have over 9.5 sets at 11/10 and that looks nailed on with the way the pair have been playing.
